JLO Photography Training Class

Photographer Al Viola coached participants on tips and techniques to capture great photos.

Photography from Your Phone
On September 24, 2017, the Training Committee partnered with two local photographers, Haley Cameron and Al Viola, to show League members how to take better photos from their phones. Covered topics included lighting, composition, focus and simple editing techniques using apps.

Eighteen attendees registered for the two hour training, which took place at Elmwood Park.  Attendees had glowing remarks. “The phone photography class was so much fun! It was really great learning all the tricks of how to take a great picture on your phone” said Kailin Pinkington. “Snapseed is an amazing app that allows you to edit your photos while on the go!”

League member Teresa Riesberg appreciated the opportunity to meet others interested in photography.  “The JLO photography training taught me all the tips and tricks of capturing the perfect photo,” she said. “I really enjoyed meeting other creative women interested in photography!”

League member Kathleen Johnson learned a few tricks worth sharing.  “My biggest takeaways were turning your cell phone upside down when trying to grab a shot low to the ground” she said. “I have tried it with some toddlers in my family and the perspective is so much better. I also use the SnapSeed app that we downloaded in the class every day! It’s a quick and easy photo editor.”

Race of the Cure
On Sunday, October 8, 2017, seven League members met in Aksarben Village to participate on the Susan G. Komen Race of the Cure team.  The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure® is the world’s largest, most successful fundraising and education event for breast cancer. This important annual event raises significant funds for the breast cancer movement. League members showed their support for the cause by running and walking in the day’s event.  Participants found the event to be impactful.

“We were so proud to be a part of Race for the Cure this year,” said League member Megan McFarlin.  “Not only to walk for the survivors but also for all those we remember and for preventative care moving forward. It was an awesome event to participate in.”

“I had never attended this event before and was amazed by how many people came out,” said League member Kendra DelaCadena.  “Survivors and  supporters, men and women alike, came together on a beautiful fall day. I look forward to next year’s Race for the Cure to see how much more its grown.”

The training showcased linens, napkin folds, serving pieces, flatware, color, texture, pattern and, of course, floral centerpieces. At the end of the evening, League Members left with an elegant floral takeaway.
