Training Committee Hosts Nonprofit Board Service

The Training Committee partnered with the Nonprofit Association of the Midlands for a two-part, five-hour session on nonprofit board service, which was held on evenings of February 27, 2018 and March 1, 2018, at the Nonprofit Association of the Midlands. Twenty six people attended the training, which was open to JLO members and the general public and offered attendees the opportunity to learn the responsibilities of a board member. Topics covered included how to work with the organization’s staff, navigate legal compliance issues and achieve an organization’s strategic direction. The training covered topics relevant to individuals of all board experience levels, from individuals considering board service to experienced board members.

Attendees spoke highly of the training. “The board training was as a great refresher on board responsibilities and was a great opportunity to ask questions about current board service and learn from others about their experiences,” said League member Liz Akert.

League member Sarah Hanify also found the training compelling.  “I really enjoyed the opportunity to take part in the nonprofit board member training, through the Nonprofit Association of the Midlands.” She said. “I think the curriculum is so useful for anyone who is anticipating serving on a board in the future. I also appreciated being able to reconnect with some of the presenters, as we all attended graduate school together. I hope JLO will continue to offer trainings and opportunities like this, as I consider it a definite value add.”
